Carol Bruton, Biography
Carol Burton was born in Toronto, Canada and studied art at the Belklas Artes de Madrid, the Camden Art Centre, as well as the London and Edinburg College of Art.
Carol's childhood home of Spain serves as inspiration for the composition of her works as well as the color palette. The starkness of the Southern Spanish landscape and its predominant colors of blue and ochre are most evident in her work. In fact, burnt earth colors have bolded her oeuvre. The stucco-quality of her canvasses, a coarse quality that exists in stark contrast to her flat skies, was a discovery of the artist herself. By mixing limestone into the oil medium with a palette knife, the Burton is able to texturally recreate the visual and tactile sensations of her Spanish childhood. She has also spent a great deal of time in the Middle East and Africa, where the open spaces and the dry colors of the desert have impacted her work. An additional sense of color and warmth present in her contemporary work stems from the scenery of her current home in the South of France.
