Hermine David, Biography
(1886-1970) Hermine David, also known as Lionette Cartan, is a French painter born on April 19, 1886 in Paris, France. At the age of 16, David was accepted into L'Ecole des Beaux Arts. As part of the Ecole de Paris artist group, she met her husband Jules Pascin, also a member of the group, in 1907. During this time, David was already a well-established painter, miniaturist, and printmaker. David and Pascin became close companions and moved to New York, and by 1918 were married. In 1920, she returned to Paris, divorced and began exhibiting in Paris and London. She left Paris again and developed her talent as a landscape artist. In 1932, she received the Legion of Honor award. Her artwork is full of textured sinuous line work, rich tonal variations, and elongated forms among a post-impressionist style. She was active in her last years, winning a watercolor prize at the Biennale de Deaurille in 1965 and five years later passed away on December 1, 1970.
